Power outage prompts early dismissal across SCC district

South Central Calhoun schools dismissed 3½ hours early Thursday after a prolonged power outage affected the district’s buildings in Rockwell City.

Power had been out in Rockwell City since approximately 9:15 a.m., leaving students and staff at the SCC Middle School and Elementary School without electricity throughout the morning. District staff remained in contact with MidAmerican Energy while working to keep students safe, comfortable and engaged.

The district was informed that power might be restored by noon, but the timeline could not be guaranteed. Due to the length of the outage and the uncertainty surrounding restoration, officials decided to dismiss students early in all SCC buildings.

The outage also prevented the district from serving every portion of the planned lunch. Each student was offered a substantial snack before dismissal.

If power is not restored in Rockwell City by 2:30 p.m., the varsity volleyball competition will be moved to Lake City and begin at 4 p.m. The junior high volleyball competition will be canceled or rescheduled for a later date.

Additional information regarding dismissal procedures and transportation will be communicated directly to families as needed.
