Everyone in Lake City knows one fun fact about the Smith family: all fourteen of Jean and Bill Smith’s children have names that start with the letter “D.” But for the Smith brothers, that shared initial isn’t the only thing they have in common. They also share a passion for racing that’s carried their family name across International Motor Contest Association dirt tracks for more than two decades.

In September 2025, long-time South Central Calhoun teacher Mishelle Gerdes lost her battle with cancer. She is remembered for her love of Halloween and dressing up with her fellow teachers.

SCC football finished an up and down regular season on a positive note, with a big win over Pocahontas to secure a third-place finish in the Class 1A-2 standings. The Titans have earned a trip to Underwood for the opening round of the state playoffs on Oct. 24, 2025.
